AMA Impairment Ratings
An AMA impairment rating is a percentage estimate, based on the American Medical Association’s guides, that measures the permanent loss of function in a body part or system. This rating is determined by a qualified physician after an injury has reached maximum medical improvement (MMI) and is used by many states to calculate disability benefits for workers’ compensation claims.
How it works
Definition
An AMA impairment rating quantifies the severity of a permanent injury as a percentage. It is a medical assessment distinct from disability, which is a broader concept that includes how the injury affects a person’s ability to work or limited activities of daily living.
Criteria
Ratings are based on the direct impact of the injury, such as loss of use or function, and are calculated once the injury has reached Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI)—meaning the condition is unlikely to improve substantially in the next year.
Methodology
Physicians use the AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment to assess the impairment. These guides provide specific methodologies for different body systems and injuries.
Application
The rating is a percentage that helps determine compensation, benefits, and the overall level of a person’s permanent impairment.
