FDA Approved Mild Concussion Blood Test

In 2018, the Food and Drug Administration approved a blood test that detects two proteins, UCH-L1 and GFAP, which are released by the brain into the bloodstream when a mild concussion occurs.

  • The test can help identify individuals whose injury is unlikely to show up on a CT scan, eliminating the need for an unhelpful test.
  • The blood test may also provide a way to quickly diagnose military personnel for a mild concussion.

Brazos Neurosciences’ NEURO-Trauma Assessment Test, utilizes a clinically significant biomarker panel comprised of four unique proteins.

  1. The Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP), and
  2. Ubiquitin C-Terminal Hydrolase-L1 (UCH-L1) are used to assess glial and neuronal damage within the brain.
  3. Elevated GFAP and
  4. UCH-L1 levels indicate ongoing injury and can be used to monitor TBI severity over time and track therapeutic efficacy.
